Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for an Organizing Director for Generation Progress (GP), American Progress’ young adult engagement arm. In conjunction with GP’s Executive Director and Communications Director, the Organizing Director leads organizing strategy by utilizing GP’s communications and advocacy tools to strategically advance progressive policies, challenge efforts that undermine such policies, and develop a national effort to increase voting among young adults aged 18–35 years old. With a focus on digital organizing, the Organizing Director’s primary purpose will be to further develop and lead GP’s national organizing efforts that translate the experiences of young adults into concrete actions that advance progressive policies and increase voter turnout among adults. The Organizing Director will also help develop and drive issue-based campaigns across the organization, specifically in the areas of gun violence prevention, criminal justice reform, immigration reform, and climate change. Reporting to GP’s Executive Director, the Organizing Director will oversee day-to-day operations and management of GP organizing staff and assist the Executive Director and Communications Director in highlighting GP’s work.

The Organizing Director is also expected to play a leading role in planning and implementing training programs for young people within GP’s different streams of work as well as mobilizing young people for weeks of action and product launches.

The ideal candidate for this position will be well versed in both politics and key policy arenas and have a strongly demonstrated commitment to social justice as well as training experience, communications savvy, and digital organizing expertise. The ideal candidate should also have substantial experience in the progressive movement and a track record of managing multiple projects and overseeing a diverse staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Executive Director, Communications Director, and GP organizing team to develop and implement organizing campaigns on GP’s core issues in key target locations, with a focus on digital organizing.
  • Develop and implement a strategy to translate young adults’ energy and activism on core policy issues into increased voter engagement among young adults.
  • Coordinate the daily operations and strategic direction of the GP organizing team in partnership with the Executive Director.
  • Develop and oversee advocacy campaigns on a range of policy issues such as gun violence prevention, criminal justice reform, immigration, and climate change.
  • Develop and oversee an online training curriculum and program for GP’s national network and young people who are involved in its campaigns.
  • Manage in-state and national partnerships with other organizations hosting weeks of action or other in-state efforts to hold policymakers accountable.
  • Represent GP to the press and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in the planning and lead the execution of workflow, goals, staffing, and funding priorities for GP advocacy campaigns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Five years of professional experience, including at least two years of experience in a leadership role. Political, legislative, government, or nonprofit experience is required.
  • High level of comfort with being a public advocate and trainer.
  • Experience with digital organizing efforts.
  • Proven track record of building, motivating, and working with a team to accomplish project goals.
  • Staff management experience in an organization of similar size and complexity.
  • Strong organizational abilities that include planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills and ability to make impactful connections with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with colleagues of varied backgrounds and temperaments.
  • Strong understanding of the progressive movement and connections to progressive allies.
  • Ability to multitask and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong writing and public speaking abilities.
  • Working knowledge of GP’s issues and goals.
