Durbin and Guitierrez Give DREAMer “Do’s and Don’ts” for Tackling New Deffered Action [VIDEO]

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.)and Rep. Luis Guitierrez (D-Ill.) released a YouTube video today, in a piecemeal effort to answer lingering questions concerning the new shift in immigration policy announced by President Barack Obama last month that would allow DREAMers– undocumented youth who plan to pursue higher education or serve in the U.S. military– to avoid deportation and receive work authorization. The DREAMer-friendly policy is only applicable to those who are under 30, have lived in the United States for at least 15 years, was brought to the states under the age of 16, and maintain a clean criminal record.

The video highlights a few DREAMer "do's and don'ts," provides information on how to comply with the stringent eligibility rules,and advises the immigrant community to avoid hiring any legal assistance while they wait patiently for more details on the policy. When the time comes, Durbin and Guitierrez suggest turning to credible community stakeholders for registration information.

The legislators representing Chicago also encouraged the young and undocumented to see the policy as an opportunity to pursue, to the highest extent, their dreams of obtaining an education.

Durbin and Guitierrez will host an event on August 15 at Navy Pier in Chicago, which is home to close to 75,000 DREAM-eligible youth, to clarify details surrounding the new Department of Homeland Security directive as announced by President Barack Obama, and get those who do qualify signed up.
