With Congress Poised to Vote on New START Treaty, Campus Progress Launches TV Ad Buy
Today at Campus Progress, we announced a cable television ad buy in Washington, D.C., to engage the public on the importance of immediate ratification of the New START Treaty.
The United States and Russia have signed the New START Treaty, which would reduce the number of nuclear weapons—and reduce the risk that these massively destructive weapons might someday be used. New START, like previous arms reduction agreements, also gives the United States the means to monitor Russian nuclear activity and thereby protect our security. New START is supported not only by the Obama Administration and progressive groups, but also by the top leaders of the U.S. military and the Secretaries of State for the last five Republican Presidents.
Inspired by a recent popular AT&T ad “Ripple Effect,” the ad rewinds time to show the potentially disastrous ramifications of inaction on the New START Treaty. The ad will run throughout the day in Washington, D.C., on MSNBC and FOX News, with an expanded ad buy possible.
"As debate around New START has intensified, more and more young people have become engaged on nuclear weapons issues," said Tobin van Ostern, Network Associate for Campus Progress. "Young people don't want a future with a U.S.-Russia arms race and greater risk of nuclear war. As the ad shows, some in Congress are staunchly opposed to passing the treaty in the lame duck session of Congress, wrongly claiming that there’s just ‘not enough time.’ Passing this treaty should be an immediate priority, and there's no justification for delay."
