RELEASE: Generation Progress Releases Resource Guide and Highlights the Need for Congress to Pass the Dream Act

Washington, D.C.— With Congress voting to end the government shutdown, Dreamers have not gotten any closer to a permanent fix for DACA. As Dreamers start to lose their protections, Generation Progress has released a comprehensive guide revealing the complicated patchwork of tuition equity laws across the country, and outlining a list of resources for the young people whose DACA benefits have ended. Without a permanent solution from Congress, depending on their state of residence, the nearly 800,000 young people who stepped out of the shadows will face a range of grim possibilities. Certain states will require students paying in-state tuition to pay out-of-state tuition once their DACA enrollment expires, effectively forcing students to suddenly pay for a massive tuition hike, find alternative ways of funding their education, or drop out of college. This reality highlights the need for Congress to pass a Dream Act now.

At Generation Progress we recognize the challenges faced by the Dreamers and have curated a broad list of resources, guides, toolkits, and options to help them navigate the unnecessarily cruel reality created by President Trump. While the reality is grim, there are concrete steps that students can take to manage the loss of their DACA status.

Every day that Congress fails to pass the Dream Act approximately 122 people lose their DACA protections, putting these young people at risk of deportation, and forcing them to make harsh decisions about their careers and education. Congress should pass a bipartisan government funding bill that funds the Children’s Health Insurance Program, the military, and protects Dreamers. We call on Members of Congress to stop their endless political games and come together to both protect Dreamers and fully fund the government long-term.
