STATEMENT: Generation Progress’ Maggie Thompson on Department of Education’s New Restrictions to ITT Tech

Washington, D.C.—Today, the U.S. Department of Education announced it would ban ITT Education Services, Inc. (ITT Tech) from enrolling new students using federal financial aid. The move also includes increased financial oversight for the for-profit college, and a requirement to inform current ITT students that the institution is not in compliance with its accreditor. For years, Generation Progress and the Higher Ed, Not Debt campaign have been ringing the alarm on ITT Tech’s abuses of students. Maggie Thompson, Executive Director of Generation Progress, issued the following statement:

“ITT Tech sold out its students to make a profit for far too long. We learned from Corinthian Colleges how important how important it is to cut off enrollment before more students are harmed. In that same style, ITT Tech preyed on vulnerable students and exploited their educational aspirations. Actions like this don’t just protect students, they protect taxpayers as well: by holding for-profit colleges responsible, the Department ensures taxpayers won’t be on the hook for an institution’s duplicitous behavior. We applaud the Department’s recognition that the interests of students should be placed above a school’s bottom line.”
